Instagram Stories are gaining traction. A lot of it. If you have been using this Instagram feature, you may have noticed that as our stories unfold we tend to lose viewers. It would be nice and useful to know what percentage of viewers stayed with us until the last segment in our Instagram Story. Here is a simple equation to keep track of view count analytics:

RR = (LSVC*100)/FSVC

Where RR is Retention Rate, LSVC is Last Story View Count, and FSVC is First Story View Count.

If FSVC represents 100% of the views, then what percentage of the total does LSVC represent? This is the question that can be answered with the common «Rule of Three» math equation above. FSVC is the «starting point» and Retention Rate (RR) is the percentage of how many views we retained.

You could use this parameter to compare retention rates per day such as comparing the RR for day 1 versus the RR for day 2. Similarly, you can apply the same comparison per month. You could even compare RR by content type, say for example, comparing a stream of «behind the scenes» stories versus a stream of «lifestyle and outdoors» stories.

After accumulating a handful of RR values, you will be able to evaluate trends and see if more people are following your IG Stories until the end, or not.

That’s it. Not a major mathematical revelation, but a useful tool nevertheless. Let me know how you plan on using it or if you found it helpful.
