From social media and Internet to AI and machine learning, companies are seeing the value derived from the evolving communications, openness, automation, and data generated. Eager to take advantage, companies are investing in their marketing resources to up their game.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4818\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">It\u2019s only natural that professionals from all walks of life are flocking towards marketing functions and departments.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f85f\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">People with technical backgrounds, e.g., programmers, are in high demand, and they are answering the call. Welcome aboard. Nevertheless, having those skills does not automatically guarantee their performance as marketers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4bfe\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">We all have to be careful here; forgetting what a marketer is\u200a\u2014\u200afoundationally\u200a\u2014\u200aposes a risk that looms when everyone is so caught up in the latest fad and trend.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4cc1\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Marketing is not for everybody. If this is how you think or sound during an interview, it may reveal that marketing is the wrong fit for you:<\/p>\n<p id=\"d118\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">1) \u201cI think I can come up with a machine learning algorithm that will minimize human conversations with clients and the need to listen to whiny consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"48c7\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Client relations and consumer insights are cornerstone in marketing. Marketers look for efficient ways to interact and listen more, not less. Marketers are sales people first.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c746\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">2)\u200a\u2014\u200a\u201cSo tell me, what is a hashtag?\u200a\u2014\u200a\u201cA hashtag is a symbol we use to tell the operating system with which program to run the script.\u201d\u200a\u2014\u200a\u201cI see. Are you on social media?\u201d\u200a\u2014\u200a\u201cWell, I don\u2019t have a Facebook or Instagram account, but I have one on GitHub.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"ac73\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Marketers know what is going on in the world around them. Marketers are curious knowledge-seekers that can see the forest for the trees.<\/p>\n<p id=\"34a0\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">3) \u201cFunction is everything! The packaging, aesthetics, and \u2018form\u2019 are just the container and vehicle to deliver the function.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"aaf0\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Marketers are brand builders. They give as much weight to form as to function. Marketers sell experiences, not just technical specs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3f66\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">4) \u201c\u2026Some clients click on buy and some others don\u2019t, but that\u2019s the way it is. It\u2019s normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"858b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Marketers understand that customers behave differently. Nevertheless, they are obsessed with understanding the\u00a0<em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">why<\/em>\u00a0behind the\u00a0<em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">what<\/em>. Marketers are analytical and nonconformists.<\/p>\n<p id=\"32e8\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">5) \u201cI apply the \u2018rule of 3\u2019: if it doesn\u2019t happen by the third attempt, it\u2019s not meant to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"31af\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Marketing is a long game, creating brand awareness and generating demand and revenue takes time. Marketers are persistent.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9be7\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">6) \u201cI need absolute silence to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"656b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Marketing departments are not a WWE show, but they are not graveyards either. Marketers are social creatures that interact daily with teammates and other departments.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2b03\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">If you are interested in switching to a marketing career or are starting out in any capacity at a company, use these simple scenarios to compare with your beliefs and internal dialogue, and see if you are, essentially, a marketer.<\/p>\n<p
