Try to involve the whole company in your online communication strategy and create a community with your current and/or potential customers. But first, YOU must get involved!

Now we ask ourselves: Who should generate the online communication for the business?

The same person who handles the offline communication should carry out the online communication of the business.

Usually this can be the marketing manager who, at the same time, is in charge of linking the offline communication to the online. If you do not have a communication department then you can hire someone to do it for you.

Today, the Community Manager figure is very popular. Companies seek other professionals to provide these services and fulfill their need to have a presence in social networks.

Keep in mind that a Community Manager’s main task is to manage a community. If you do not have community, what you really need is a Social Media Manager. The basic difference between these two profiles is their capacity to resolve incidents.

A Community Manager, as mentioned, manages a community. This allows him/her to not give immediate answers and not necessarily resolve all the differences that present themselves in their community, especially those that require a complex resolution. The Community Manager must however have the capacity to generate valuable content and involve the community.

On the other hand, a Social Media Manager is responsible for being present in every social network. He/she must monitor and immediately answer any questions or problems afflicting people –current or potential customers- whether they belong to the community or not. This profile must be very responsive and therefore have the best product and service knowledge within your company. They should also have the ability to mediate disputes and respond to any reputation crisis that might arise.

The same person could respond to the needs of both profiles. Even then, you must bear in mind that it is essential that a Social Media Manager be a part of your company.Parte II

So, what should you do if you are a small business or an entrepreneur? Get advice and get involved!

You can hire a company to advise or train you in the use of social networks. You can even request that they help you with the duties of a Community Manager or that they do it for you. But you must understand that you or your company cannot be indifferent to everything that is happening on the Internet. You must participate in the community, monitor social networks, and provide the answers to the questions that a Community Manager cannot.

If you are an entrepreneur and you believe you do not have the time for these duties, or have a company and think that you cannot make someone participate because it would be “a waste of time,” then you are not ready to be introduced to the 2.0 world where the main objective is to listen, talk and generate value within the community.

Once you have answered these questions you can start you can start your immersion into social networks.
